LEED Rating System
Grabill Products Satisfy LEED® Requirements
The use of environmentally friendly, recycled materials to create Grabill products have allowed them to contribute to the LEED rating system. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system provides a set of standards to obtain sustainable construction.
The use of certified wood and glass, along with recycled and low emitting materials, satisfies a number of category requirements of the rating system. With these areas met, Grabill projects are eligible to apply for LEED certification.
LEED® Rating System Requirements met with Grabill Products:
Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ)
EQ 4.1 Low Emitting Materials, Adhesives and Sealants: Titebond wood glue used contains low VOCs (volatile organic compounds), is water resistant, and non-toxic, therefore not requiring use of gloves when applying. The Spectrum sealant used contains recycled content, has a low voc, and contains no extracted material. (1 Point)
EQ 4.2 Low Emitting Materials, Paints: Grabill uses low VOC paint products. Paints and finishes contain little or no toxins that pollute indoor air, and are water or latex based to decrease hazardous fumes and waste. (1 Point)
EQ 4.4 Low Emitting Materials, Composite Wood: Composite wood and agrifiber products used from Pacific Wood Laminates contain low emitting materials. No urea formaldehyde is added. (1 Point)
EQ 6.1 Controllability of Systems, Operable Windows: Operable windows increase ventilation and can be used as an alternate option to control heating and cooling. (1 Point)
Materials and Resources (MR)
MR 4.1-4.2 Recycled Content (25-50+%): Numerous supplies and materials used to create Grabill’s products have a large percentage of recycled content: (2 Points)
- Aluminum cladding is 90% recycled.
- Glass used is made from recycled materials.
MR 5.1 Local/Regional Materials, 20% Manufactured Locally: Viracon glass, composite wood, and Spectrum sealant used are manufactured regionally, within 500 miles of site. (1 Point)
MR 7.1 Certified Wood: Grabill uses Smartwood FSC certified lumber. The lumber used is produced from trees harvested on certified forestry. Pacific Wood Laminates composite wood used is also FSC certified. (1 Point)
Energy and Atmosphere (EA)
EA 4.1 Windows: Grabill uses NFRC certified glass and glass with low U-value to provide a better insulating value for heating purposes. A low solar heat gain coefficient transmits less solar heat into the house for cooling purposes. (1 Point)
Note: These products are not officially certified for LEED® credits. Lumber is FSC certified.
